Granny Basketball Rules!!!

Grandmother BasketballThe “Granny Basket League TM” has the moto a “gentle game for grannies of a certain age”.  These enthusiastic grannies are using basket-ball to keep fit and keep playing the game they love.  The grandmothers are following rules from a six person game developed in the 1920s, in fact they often wear the 1920s clothes just to go along with the theme.

All you need to qualify for the grannies basketball league, according to the website, is:-
• “Be able to sustain moderate physical activity for several minutes without collapsing”
• “furnish and maintain her own uniform”
• “be willing to perform in public”
• “be 50 years of age or older”
• “obtain doctor’s permission to participate”
It is also noted that “granny basketball players are not required to have any athletic ability or previous experience”

Patricia Babcock McGraw of the Daily Herald has also picked up on the story and has noted that “Jane Bus can take the ball to the hoop, and Betty Krupp isn't afraid to put a body on someone when she boxes out”.  The two women take their basketball seriously and as grandmothers know that they need to take their health and fitness seriously.  The report explains how under granny basketball rules the grannies are not allowed to move faster than a quick walk or make hard physical content, but that doesn’t mean that it is not entertaining and certainly does not mean that it lacks style!  Patricia also interviews Krupp, a youth minister, grandmother of three and retired school teacher who laughs "I wouldn't mind if we were allowed to be a bit more active!"
