The two best red wines for a wedding reception

Many grand mothers enjoy red wine at a wedding reception party!
Choosing a red wine for the wedding reception party can be a difficult task.  It is worth taking your time to do this, since many people have strong opinions about the appropriate red wine for a wedding reception party.

Which red wine is the best recommended red wine for a wedding party?
In the opinion of grannies united the following two red wines could all make perfect red wines for your wedding reception celebration.  These red wines for weddings are however just intended to help you get going in your wine sampling journey before the final wedding reception party red wine is chosen.

Which two red wines do we consider to be the best for wedding receptions?
This is extremely difficult and grannies united has taken the view that we would simply give some indicators to help point you in the right direction.  Choosing the red wine is a very personal decision and one we believe each wedding couple should make on their own.  However wedding reception parties usually last many hours, so we believe a lighter red wine is usually the preferred option.  A heavy red wine like a Shiraz is, in our opinion, inappropriate for a lengthy wedding reception party.  The two best red wines chosen are therefore (they are not in order of preference):
• Cabernet Sauvignon
• Pinot Noir
Each of these two fine red wines are discussed below.

Two best red wines for wedding parties: Cabernet Sauvignon
The fruity cabernet sauvignon grape is a safe bet for many red wine drinkers.  It is one of the most popular red wines.   It is also very easy to drink which in our opinion makes it perfect for the wedding reception, which will have a broad variety of wedding party guests.

Two best red wines for wedding parties: Pinot Noir
Again the pinot noir is an extremely fruity soft red wine, which again is easy to drink.  The pinot noir red wines also make excellent partners for many of the classic wedding reception dinners (eg lamb).

Are new world red wines the best for wedding reception parties?
Once you have decided on the type of red wine grape you prefer for your wedding reception, the couple then have the difficult decision of if the red wine should be new world (eg California, New Zealand) or old world (eg France).  There is strong opinion that the old wines offer more variety (& risk) to the wine connoisseur.   The new world wines on the other hand are often quoted as being a “safe bet” (ie there is not as high a risk of the wine being “exceptional” or “appauling”).  New world red wines are also often cheaper and therefore make a better option for the wedding reception.  At grannies united we would rather spend the wedding budget on a better champagne, but that is just a personal opinion.

Ensure that the red wine enhances the flavour of the wedding reception food
With the wedding red wine it is crucial to ensure that the red wine enhances the flavour of the food.  Similarly it is important to ensure the food enhances the flavour of the wedding reception red wine!  If you are having caterers for your wedding reception then they should be able to help you with your short-list.

Don’t forget to ensure the perfect marriage of the red & white wines
It is important to remember that many of the wedding guests will start on the wedding reception white wine and then move onto the wedding red wine.  It is therefore important to ensure the perfect “marriage” of these two wines.  Grannies United therefore thinks that the two wines should be tasted together in this order.  It’s a tough job, but one that many a grandma would be willing to help with.
